I only use value for creature design. I like to start out with dark and mid tone COLOR until I have a good composition then work in the high lights and details while playing with depth and atmospheric fog. I got 80% finished when I realized I did this painting on one layer LOL. I saw ur comment on the vale dragons. not all paintings started from value are muddy. just depends on the artists skills. when you start in value first (at least for me) I get it 70% finished in value, open a overlay layer and set it to clipping mask (to color only withing the subject and not the background) and color it in, merge down and open a new layer and paint over it in color. some ppl only color it in and don't paint over which causes the muddiness you mentioned. (hope you learned somthing new )
i have, yes... that extra opaque layer seems to be the key to adding some extra umph to the painting.. but i like your style here.. working purely in value is kind of hard for me to gauge the color, working in dark and mid tones seems to be a good compromise..
not particularly, but may make a forest map like this one when me and my group get our games up and running. but that wont be until 2013. but im glad you like it
